My work laptop connects using a VPN when working from home. The steps are: 1) Connect to broadband. 2) connect to VPN using cisco. 3) connect to work network . Note that 1 and 2 work fine. 3 is supposed to be automatic but doesn’t work if I connect via by EE broadband. However it does if I reboot my EE router. Once I’ve rebooted it works fine.

This router is known to have disconnection problems, while I don't know if that applies to using a VPN I don't see why it would be any different. If you go to Troubleshooting within the Hub Manager you can view the event log, select WAN as the category and you can cut and paste the relevant message.
