In Windows, as shown above, command name is “tracert”, but in Linux, Unix and Apple MAC OS, command is “traceroute”. How does traceroute work? As shown in below diagram, there are intermediate routers between source and destination. It sends many packets toward the destination.
I installed Cygwin with "inetutils*" packages checked, but there is no traceroute command and corresponding executable in /usr/bin/. I also tried searching for "traceroute" with Cygwin package search and found this substring in list of "zsh" files. I installed zsh and tried traceroute and tcptraceroute with no results. traceroute is a great tool to investigate network routing, check connection speeds, or identify bottlenecks. The Traceroute function can be invoked by either the TSO TRACERTE command or the z/OS® UNIX shell traceroute/otracert command. The traceroute command utilizes the IP protocol "time to live" field and attempts to elicit an ICMP TIME_EXCEEDED response from each gateway along the path to some host.
